Description: This community typically occurs in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas on sideslopes in bouldery areas or with hoodoo outcrops. The rocks provide additional moisture to the community, as well as providing fire protection. The canopy is dominated by <i>Quercus emoryi</i>, and other typical canopy species include <i>Prunus serotina var. virens</i>. Shrubs include <i>Prunus serotina var. virens, Celtis laevigata var. reticulata, Quercus grisea, Baccharis neglecta, Croton</i> sp., and <i>Brickellia</i> spp. <i>Muhlenbergia emersleyi</i> dominates the herb layer, with <i>Schizachyrium scoparium var. scoparium</i> also present.
