Name: Juniperus coahuilensis / Canotia holacantha Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: These woodlands have been described from south of the Mogollon Rim in central Arizona from dissected plains, valleys with eroding breaks of alluvium, and eroding hills. Sites are flat to steep, often with eroded substrates derived from calcareous parent materials. Stands have an open, evergreen, scale-leaved tree canopy (5-10% cover) that is dominated by Juniperus coahuilensis, sometimes with Juniperus osteosperma codominating. The shrub layer is dominated by Canotia holacantha and may include other species such as Quercus turbinella, Nolina microcarpa, Mahonia haematocarpa, Mahonia fremontii, Dasylirion wheeleri, Prosopis velutina, Yucca elata and Yucca baccata. The typically sparse herbaceous layer is mainly composed of perennial graminoids with scattered forbs. Common species may include Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua hirsuta, Bouteloua eriopoda, Aristida spp., Sporobolus cryptandrus, Hesperostipa neomexicana, Muhlenbergia porteri, and many others. The dominance of Canotia holacantha in the understory and the sparse cover of Quercus turbinella and perennial graminoids separate this association from other Juniperus coahuilensis-dominated woodlands.
