Name: Pinus albicaulis / Calamagrostis rubescens Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This is a conifer woodland found in the high elevations of the northeastern Cascades of Washington. Eastern outliers occur in Washington's Okanogan Highlands but not in Idaho. Sites appear on upper slopes and ridges on generally southerly aspects between 1740 and 2015 m (5700-6600 feet) elevation. Environments characteristically have little snow accumulation due to high winds and sublimation. Tree canopies rarely close and trees are mostly erect and multi-stemmed. The existing vegetation is dominated by Pinus albicaulis which is occasionally associated with other trees such as Abies lasiocarpa. Two graminoids, Calamagrostis rubescens and/or Carex geyeri, characterize the undergrowth. They usually appear with Festuca viridula, Lupinus species, or Paxistima myrsinites.
