Name: Platanus wrightii Riparian Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This desert riparian woodland occurs in southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. The elevation ranges from 1000-1775 m (3280-5820 feet). Sites are on stream terraces in valley bottoms, foothills, and mountain canyons. Substrates are typically composed of gravelly to sandy alluvium and are often flooded during monsoon season. The vegetation is characterized by the dominance or codominance of Platanus wrightii in the tree canopy. Prosopis velutina, Alnus oblongifolia, Fraxinus velutina, Juglans major, or Juniperus spp. may codominate. If present, the shrub layer is sparse to moderately dense and composed of mixed shrubs, including Baccharis sarothroides, Brickellia spp., Celtis laevigata var. reticulata, Dasylirion wheeleri, Erythrina flabelliformis, Gossypium thurberi, Lycium spp., Mimosa aculeaticarpa var. biuncifera, and Rhus trilobata. The herbaceous layer is sparse to moderately dense and typically dominated by perennial graminoids Bouteloua curtipendula and Muhlenbergia rigens, but numerous forbs and other grasses are often present.
