Name: Artemisia tridentata / Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus / (Poa secunda) Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: The association is currently only described from Death Valley National Park in California, where it was found in Joshua Flat, Panamint Mountains, and Last Chance and Nelson ranges. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It was sampled at upper elevations ranging from approximately 1520 to 2915 m, with an elevation average of 2139 m. It is found on variable slope positions, on gentle to somewhat steep slopes (4 to 26°), and on variable aspects. Soils include clays and loams and are derived from a variety of substrates such as granodiorite, limestone, sandstone, and shale. The association forms an open to intermittent shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 8 to 53%. The emergent tree layer is sparse and ranges from 0 to 3% cover, and the herb understory is variable and ranges from 1 to 12% cover. Artemisia tridentata is dominant in the overstory along with characteristic shrub Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus. A diversity of other shrubs is often present, including Ephedra nevadensis, Ephedra viridis, and Opuntia polyacantha var. erinacea. Commonly associated herbs include Achnatherum hymenoides, Castilleja angustifolia, Elymus elymoides, Pleuraphis jamesii, and Sphaeralcea ambigua, and those trees sometimes present and emergent include Pinus monophylla andYucca brevifolia.
