Name: Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana - Purshia tridentata / Pseudoroegneria spicata Shrubland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This description is based on occurrences at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. A combination of <i>Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana</i> and <i>Purshia tridentata</i> dominate the canopy of this shrubland association. Other shrubs, such as <i>Ericameria nauseosa</i> and <i>Eriogonum microthecum</i> may also occur regularly. Shrub cover can range from 25 to 75%, and cover of the shrub stratum is greater than that of the herbaceous stratum. <i>Pseudoroegneria spicata</i> is typically the most abundant grass in the relatively sparse herbaceous understory. Other perennial grasses, such as <i>Poa secunda, Elymus lanceolatus, Hesperostipa comata</i>, and <i>Bromus tectorum</i> (exotic) are often present as well. Forbs occur at very low cover values and often include <i>Eriogonum heracleoides, Crepis acuminata, Phacelia hastata</i>, and <i>Penstemon deustus</i>. Soils that support this plant association can range from xeric sites with shallow soils to sites where soils are deep and well-developed.
