Name: Alnus incana - Betula occidentalis Wet Shrubland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This alder - birch shrubland association is found in Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Washington and may also occur in California, Utah, Montana and Wyoming. This description is based on information only from Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. This association is documented from a single plot at Great Sand Dunes located on a valley floor at 2588 m elevation. Terrain is generally flat and intermittently flooded. Soils are poorly drained loams. Ground cover is composed of 40% litter and duff, 20% bare soil, 5% rock, and 10% water. This association is characterized by a dense canopy of <i>Betula occidentalis</i> (50%) and <i>Alnus incana</i> (30%). Small amounts of other tall or short shrubs are also present, including <i>Acer glabrum, Salix lucida ssp. caudata, Ribes leptanthum</i>, and <i>Rosa woodsii</i>. Herbaceous cover is graminoid-dominated but includes trace amounts of numerous forb species. <i>Glyceria striata</i> is the dominant graminoid with 30% cover.
