Description: In Washington, this association occurs at middle to high elevations on a variety of sites that are often steep. Such areas occurs above glacier meadows, near large lateral moraines, near small dry subalpine streambeds, on talus and on debris cones. Site are topographically moist but well-drained. The well-developed tall-shrub layer is dominated by <i>Alnus viridis ssp. sinuata</i>. Few other shrubs are present with the exception of <i>Sambucus racemosa</i>. The associated understory species are diverse although no single species appears in all plots. <i>Heracleum maximum, Hydrophyllum fendleri</i>, and <i>Thalictrum occidentale</i> are the most constant and are often prominent. <i>Claytonia sibirica, Maianthemum stellatum, Valeriana sitchensis, Veratrum viride</i>, and <i>Pteridium aquilinum</i> are infrequent but are prominent to codominant when they do occur.
