Description: This association occurs in the Cascade Range and Olympic Mountains at middle elevations 1125-1410 m (3700-4600 feet). Sites are usually moderate to steep slopes, usually on talus, debris fields or avalanche chutes with subsurface irrigation. The well-developed tall-shrub layer is dominated by <i>Alnus viridis ssp. sinuata</i> with a slightly lower shrub layer characterized by &gt;10% cover of <i>Oplopanax horridus</i>. Several other shrub species, especially <i>Rubus spectabilis</i> and <i>Sambucus racemosa</i>, can occur in abundance. Frequently occurring herbs include <i>Athyrium filix-femina, Achlys californica, Achlys triphylla, Claytonia sibirica</i>. <i>Streptopus lanceolatus var. curvipes, Maianthemum stellatum</i>, and <i>Viola glabella</i>. <i>Callitropsis nootkatensis</i> is the most constantly occurring tree species but it is never prominent.
