Name: Atriplex confertifolia Great Basin Shrubland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This shrub association occurs throughout the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin and into Death Valley in southern California. Total vegetation cover rarely exceeds 20% and is clearly dominated by <i>Atriplex confertifolia</i>. Many other shrubs species may also be present, although they contribute little to the total canopy. The herbaceous layer rarely has more than 5% total cover; species vary greatly by location, but common graminoids include <i>Elymus multisetus, Elymus elymoides, Leymus salinus, Poa secunda, Dasyochloa pulchella</i>, and <i>Pleuraphis jamesii</i>. Forbs are diverse but only contribute measurable cover in unusually wet years; <i>Chaenactis douglasii, Phacelia crenulata</i>, and <i>Mentzelia albicaulis</i> are widespread. Disturbed sites have high cover of <i>Bromus tectorum</i>. Sites tend to occur on ridges, flats, alluvial fans, talus slopes and badlands often in a matrix of other high desert shrublands. Sites are level to gentle to steep slopes between 1040 and 2194 m (3800-7200 feet) elevation. Soils tend to be alkaline, shallow, well-drained clay loams, sometimes with a high rock or gravel content.
