Description: This association occurs above upper treeline (alpine zone). Sites occupied are well-drained slopes (north aspect at Mount Rainier and on south to west aspects in North Cascades). The dwarf-shrub <i>Empetrum nigrum</i> dominates the vegetation, which typically covers approximately half of the ground surface. Other dwarf-shrubs such as <i>Phyllodoce glanduliflora</i> or <i>Salix nivalis</i> maybe present. <i>Lupinus sellulus var. lobbii</i> is usually present to prominent at Mount Rainier but is less prominent in the North Cascades. The forbs <i>Erigeron aureus, Oreostemma alpigenum</i>, and <i>Pedicularis contorta</i> are frequent at Mount Rainier. <i>Salix cascadensis</i> and <i>Vaccinium cespitosum</i> are associated short shrubs in the North Cascades.
