Description: This association occurs mostly in the subalpine and lower alpine, at 1460-2165 m (4800-7100 feet) elevation. In the Olympic Mountains, it occurs on flat to moderately steep slopes. Soils can be rocky. The vegetation is dominated by the dwarf-shrub <i>Phyllodoce empetriformis</i> or <i>Vaccinium deliciosum</i>. The forb <i>Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus</i> or <i>Lupinus latifolius</i> is always present to codominant. <i>Cassiope mertensiana</i> can be a member of the dwarf-shrub layer but is less prominent than other dwarf-shrubs. Other frequent species are <i>Luetkea pectinata, Hieracium gracile, Carex spectabilis, Castilleja parviflora</i>, and <i>Polygonum bistortoides</i>. This association occurs at Mount Rainier and in the Olympic Mountains.
