Name: Andropogon hallii - Carex inops ssp. heliophila Grassland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This sand bluestem prairie community type is found in restricted areas of the northern Great Plains of the United States. Stands occur on gently to steeply sloping terrain with sand or sandy loam soil. In Montana, stands occur on slopes of any aspect, but north is the least likely. In North Dakota, they occur on steep, choppy sands. In Colorado, stands occur on sandhills and sand dunes within the sandsage prairie. The vegetation is very open, ranging from 15-50% cover. The taller herbaceous stratum of this community is dominated by <i>Andropogon hallii</i>, with associates of <i>Calamovilfa longifolia, Hesperostipa comata</i>, and <i>Sporobolus cryptandrus</i>. In southeastern North Dakota <i>Koeleria macrantha, Redfieldia flexuosa</i>, and <i>Hesperostipa spartea</i> are present at low abundance. The lower herbaceous stratum is dominated by <i>Carex</i> spp., especially <i>Carex inops ssp. heliophila</i>. Other species that may be present are <i>Artemisia frigida, Artemisia filifolia, Carex filifolia, Carex duriuscula, Dalea villosa</i>, and <i>Yucca glauca</i>.
