Name: Prosopis glandulosa / Muhlenbergia porteri Ruderal Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This is a ruderal type in the Southwest (known from Fort Bliss and the Borderlands area), and a minor type on White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. It may also occur in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas as well as northern Mexico. Unlike the rest of the communities of this alliance, this association occurs both on the coarse soils (sand to loamy sand) of stabilized sand deposits of basin floors, and on granite-derived alluvial fan deposits. Elevations range from 1200 to 1670 m (3925-5475 feet). Stands are characterized by a moderately open (25% average cover) shrub layer dominated by Prosopis glandulosa, with Muhlenbergia porteri dominating both under canopies and in the inter-shrub spaces. Additionally, stands are relatively high in diversity (25 species reported) and commonly include Atriplex canescens, Ephedra trifurca, Yucca elata, Dasyochloa pulchella, Sporobolus flexuosus, and Bouteloua eriopoda. Both species composition and geomorphology suggest an intermediate disturbance stage between more wind-eroded coppice dune types, such as ~Prosopis glandulosa / Atriplex canescens Ruderal Shrubland (CEGL001382)$$, and stabilized Sporobolus flexuosus or Bouteloua eriopoda grasslands of the basin and bajadas.
