Name: Carex spectabilis - Polygonum bistortoides Alpine Meadow
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association occurs in the Cascade Range and Olympic Mountains of Washington and may occur in British Columbia. The vegetation is usually a lush meadow dominated or codominated by Carex spectabilis. Polygonum bistortoides and Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus and/or Lupinus latifolius are usually present to prominent. Erigeron peregrinus, Luetkea pectinata, and Valeriana sitchensis are often present but always less abundant than Carex spectabilis. Many other species can occur, but are rarely more than prominent. This subalpine meadow occurs between 1030-2060 m (3400-6750 feet) elevation on well-drained, somewhat moist soils. It occasionally appears in avalanche chutes where trees and other woody species are periodically removed.
