Description: This association occurs above treeline (alpine zone) at Mount Rainier. In the Olympics, it can occur at subalpine elevations on harsh, rocky sites. Sites are flat to gentle slopes with well-drained, often rocky soils. This association is found in patches or strips among stones and/or gravel. <i>Lupinus sellulus var. lobbii</i> is typically prominent to codominant. <i>Erigeron aureus</i> and/or <i>Minuartia obtusiloba</i> are also typically prominent to codominant. <i>Festuca saximontana</i> in the Cascades or <i>Festuca brachyphylla</i> in the Olympic Mountains, along with <i>Carex phaeocephala, Luzula spicata, Penstemon procerus, Phlox diffusa</i>, and <i>Solidago simplex var. nana</i> are frequently present.
