Description: This community is found in the Interior Highlands of the south-central United States to the Western Allegheny Plateau. Stands occur on gentle to moderately steep slopes of dissected hills and plains. Soils are well-drained, shallow to deep, often over sandstone, cherts, or cherty limestone. Stands are dominated by a closed-canopy deciduous tree layer. The dominants are <i>Quercus alba</i> and <i>Quercus rubra</i>. Typical associates include <i>Carya ovata, Carya tomentosa, Carya ovalis, Nyssa sylvatica, Quercus falcata, Quercus velutina</i>, and <i>Pinus echinata</i> in parts of the range. The shrub and small-tree layer contains <i>Cornus florida</i>. <i>Parthenocissus quinquefolia</i> is a typical vine. The low-shrub layer may be dominated by <i>Vaccinium pallidum</i>. The herbaceous layer contains <i>Actaea racemosa, Desmodium glutinosum, Desmodium nudiflorum, Galium pilosum</i>, and <i>Polystichum acrostichoides</i>.
