Name: Picea x albertiana / Spiraea douglasii var. douglasii Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This small- to medium-patch community of British Columbia occurs on gentle lower slopes and level moist sites in areas of cold-air accumulation and is often associated with wetlands. Cold soils and summer frosts limit tree productivity. Soils are moderately fine-textured to loamy, occasionally gravely, and develop on morainal material or fluvial veneers over moraine. The open forest canopy is dominated by Pinus contorta var. latifolia or by Picea x albertiana and sometimes Populus tremuloides. The shrub layer is densely dominated by Spiraea douglasii var. douglasii, along with Salix sp. and Lonicera involucrata, Vaccinium membranaceum, and sometimes Ledum glandulosum. The herbaceous layer is moderate, including Cornus canadensis, Lycopodium annotinum, Rubus pedatus, with Calamagrostis canadensis and Gaultheria hispidula. The moss layer is low in cover and commonly includes moderate cover of Pleurozium schreberi and Ptilium crista-castrensis, sometimes with Aulacomnium palustre and Sphagnum sp. This association forms the central concept of the British Columbia vegetation suballiance in which it is classified. In contrast to related associations within the BC vegetation hierarchy, which have very high cover of mosses ranging from 50-80% cover, including such species as Sphagnum spp., Hylocomium splendens, and Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus, this association rarely has more than 40% cover of mosses and never with high cover of these three species.
