Description: This forest or woodland association is found in the Cascades and the northern and eastern Olympic Mountains at high elevations on mid to upper slopes or ridgetops on sites with well-drained soils. The canopy is usually codominated by <i>Tsuga mertensiana</i> and <i>Abies amabilis</i> or occasionally <i>Callitropsis nootkatensis</i>. <i>Abies lasiocarpa</i> is occasionally prominent. The usually dense shrub layer is at least codominated by <i>Rhododendron albiflorum</i>. <i>Vaccinium alaskaense, Vaccinium ovalifolium</i>, or <i>Vaccinium membranaceum</i> usually codominate and <i>Menziesia ferruginea</i> is sometimes prominent to codominant. The herb layer is sparse to moderate and is occasionally dominated by <i>Rubus pedatus, Rubus lasiococcus</i>, or <i>Xerophyllum tenax</i>.
