Name: Acer negundo / Brickellia (grandiflora, longifolia) Riparian Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This box-elder woodland association is currently known from Zion National Park in Utah and Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, and the description is based on occurrences there. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this type. At Zion, this association occurs on a narrow valley floor at an elevation of 1675 m (5500 feet) on sandy soils. At Grand Canyon, it occurs in drainages and along intermittent streams in the Inner Canyon. It generally occurs at 1225 to 1400 m (4100-4625 feet) elevation, but has been observed as low as 1050 m (3450 feet). It is typically found in shaded areas, on flat or very gentle slopes (up to 2°). Soils are well- to rapidly-drained sandy loams or clays that typically lie on top of limestone. This association supports a moderately dense canopy and subcanopy of Acer negundo, and a short- or dwarf-shrub layer dominated by Brickellia longifolia (Arizona) or Brickellia grandiflora (Utah). Shrubs are scarce or absent. Native graminoid cover is extremely low. Other herbaceous species present are variable and contribute minimal cover.
