Name: Pinus contorta - Callitropsis nootkatensis / Racomitrium lanuginosum Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: Located within the Very Wet Hypermaritime Coastal Western Hemlock Subzone (CWHvh) along the windward outer coast from 0 to 600 m above sea level, this community may be found from western and northern Vancouver Island and the mainland coast adjacent to the northern tip of Vancouver Island northward to Portland Canal. Site conditions are very poor upper slopes and crests on granitic or similar nutritionally very poor (acidic) rocky knolls. This is a very low productivity, scrubby, open coniferous woodland community with mainly uneven-aged older successional stages. The leading tree species are Pinus contorta var. contorta and Callitropsis nootkatensis, which typically are little more than 10 m tall, and are also distributed throughout the understory shrub layers with some Tsuga heterophylla and Thuja plicata. Characteristic species in the moderately developed low-shrub layer include Juniperus communis, Gaultheria shallon, Vaccinium spp., Menziesia ferruginea, Ledum groenlandicum, Kalmia microphylla, and Elliottia pyroliflora. The diverse but poorly developed herb layer includes Blechnum spicant, Cornus canadensis, Maianthemum dilatatum, Coptis aspleniifolia, Coptis trifolia, Nephrophyllidium crista-galli, and Trichophorum cespitosum. The diverse, moderately developed moss layer features the ever-present Rhytidiadelphus loreus and Hylocomium splendens, along with Racomitrium lanuginosum, and Cladonia spp. The distinctive upland rocky knoll habitat with scrubby open woodland and relatively driest soil conditions should be enough to distinguish this community from all others in the CWHvh Subzone.
