Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii / Racomitrium canescens Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This small-patch community occurs along the southern mainland coast and adjacent islands of British Columbia. It is restricted to crests and upper steep slopes where soils are very shallow and exposed bedrock is present. This very dry, lowland evergreen woodland is characterized by scattered, stunted Pseudotsuga menziesii and, sometimes, small amounts of Pinus contorta var. contorta and Thuja plicata which are restricted to deeper pockets of mineral soil in the underlying fractured bedrock. Gaultheria shallon, Holodiscus discolor, and Vaccinium parvifolium are the most common species in the sparse shrub layer. Herbs are also sparse and include Festuca occidentalis, Polypodium glycyrrhiza, and Aira praecox. The abundant moss layer is dominated by Racomitrium canescens and Pleurozium schreberi. The paucity of Gaultheria shallon and abundance of Racomitrium canescens and Pleurozium schreberi serve to differentiate this association from other closely related associations.
