Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii / Artemisia tridentata (ssp. vaseyana, ssp. wyomingensis) Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This woodland association is only known from the Curecanti National Recreation Area in western Colorado in the Gunnison River Canyon and along Cebolla Creek. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this type. Stands occur on talus slopes in canyons and ravines. Sites are steep (64-78% slopes), occur between 2340 and 2358 m elevation, and are oriented to the northeast. Substrates are rapidly drained sandy soils derived from gneiss talus and colluvium. The unvegetated surface has low to moderate cover of litter and exposure of bare soil. Large and small rocks provide low to moderate cover. Downed wood is common. The vegetation is characterized by an open tree canopy(15-28% cover) 10-35 m high composed of Pseudotsuga menziesii, and a relatively open short-shrub layer of Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis shrubs provide 15 to 20% cover. Scattered Pseudotsuga menziesii and Juniperus scopulorum 2-10 m tall form a subcanopy. Other shrubs present include Cercocarpus montanus, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Quercus gambelii, and Symphoricarpos rotundifolius. The low to moderately dense herbaceous layer is moderately diverse and mostly composed of graminoids, such as Achnatherum hymenoides, Elymus elymoides, Koeleria macrantha, Poa fendleriana, Poa secunda, and sparse cover of forbs. Lichens and mosses provide sparse to moderate cover, up to 25%.
