Name: Tsuga heterophylla - Abies amabilis / Tiarella trifoliata var. unifoliata - Achlys triphylla - Rubus pedatus Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This moist maritime coniferous community is found along the leeward Vancouver Island Ranges from approximately 400 to 1050 m above sea level, on the Straight of Georgia side. The slope positions are variable from upper to lower, with gradients that are normally not steep. Well-drained, slightly dry and comparatively rich loamy soils are characteristic. Tsuga heterophylla and Abies amabilis normally dominate the main canopy. There is a potential presence of large old Pseudotsuga menziesii in the uppermost canopy. Thuja plicata also forms a minor component in the canopy. The moderately developed shrub layer is largely occupied by Abies amabilis, Tsuga heterophylla, Vaccinium spp., and Mahonia nervosa. Although the herb layer does not have heavy coverage, it can have good species diversity. A number of richer site indicators, including Achlys triphylla, Tiarella trifoliata, Polystichum munitum, and Trillium ovatum, are frequently present. Rhytidiopsis robusta, Hylocomium splendens, and Rhytidiadelphus loreus are the main species in the moss layer. This association is distinguished by its non-steep terrain on upper to lower slope positions, and its slightly dry, moderately rich soils. When found growing together in a mature to old-forest successional stage, useful indicator species include Chimaphila menziesii or Chimaphila umbellata with Achlys triphylla, Tiarella trifoliata, Polystichum munitum, and Trillium ovatum. Ferns such as Gymnocarpium dryopteris and Athyrium filix-femina, which indicate fresh to very moist and rich soil conditions, should be absent or found only on incidental microsites.
