Name: Tsuga heterophylla - Pseudotsuga menziesii - Thuja plicata / Achlys triphylla - Gymnocarpium dryopteris Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This moist maritime coniferous community may be found roughly between 400 to 700 m above sea level along the leeward Vancouver Island Ranges from near Jordan River in the south to Sayward in the north, and including Quadra to West Thurlow islands. The slope positions are variable from middle to lower, with gradients that are normally gentle. Well- to moderately well-drained, fresh and comparatively rich medium-textured soils are normal for these sites. In the mature to old-forest stage, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Tsuga heterophylla, and Thuja plicata characteristically dominate the canopy. Abies amabilis may also have minor presence in the canopy. The moderately developed shrub layer features Tsuga heterophylla, Vaccinium parvifolium, Vaccinium alaskaense, Mahonia nervosa, Abies amabilis, Rubus spectabilis, and Rosa gymnocarpa. There are a number of richer site indicators, such as Achlys triphylla, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Tiarella trifoliata, and Polystichum munitum, in the herb layer. Eurhynchium oreganum, Rhytidiadelphus loreus, Hylocomium splendens, and Plagiomnium insigne are the main species in the moss layer. This association is distinguished by its normally gentle terrain on middle to lower slope positions and its fresh moderately rich soils. When found growing together widely throughout a mature to old-forest successional stage, the following species are helpful indicators for this community: Achlys triphylla, Tiarella trifoliata, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Maianthemum stellatum, and Polystichum munitum. If present, there should only be very low coverage of Oplopanax horridus and Adiantum pedatum.
