Name: Tsuga heterophylla - Pseudotsuga menziesii - Abies amabilis / Paxistima myrsinites Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This coniferous community is found in the climatically transitional middle to leeward eastern valley systems of the Coast Mountains from the lower Klinaklini River at the head of Knight Inlet northwestward to the lower Kimsquit River valley near the headwaters of Dean Channel, approximately 75 km north of Bella Coola. The slope positions are variable, from ridge crests to middle slopes and flats. The sandy soils are developed on morainal, colluvial, and fluvial or glaciofluvial materials. Very rapidly to rapidly drained, moderately dry and nutrient-poor to medium soils are normal for these sites. In the mature to old-forest stage Tsuga heterophylla and Pseudotsuga menziesii often have highest coverage in the canopy, followed by Thuja plicata and Abies amabilis. Along with regeneration of all of the above conifers except Pseudotsuga menziesii, the shrub layer features Paxistima myrsinites, Vaccinium membranaceum, Vaccinium parvifolium, Amelanchier alnifolia, and Menziesia ferruginea. The lightly developed herb layer typically includes Chimaphila umbellata, Orthilia secunda, Goodyera oblongifolia, and Pyrola asarifolia. Rhytidiopsis robusta, Pleurozium schreberi, Hylocomium splendens, and Peltigera spp. lead in the well-developed moss layer. This association is distinguished by its moderately dry and nutritionally poor to medium soils. When found growing together throughout a mature to old-forest successional stage, Paxistima myrsinites and Chimaphila umbellata are helpful indicators for this community. Unless associated with small drier microsites, there should be an absence or only very low coverage of Pinus contorta, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, and Cladonia spp.
