Name: Tsuga mertensiana - Picea sitchensis - Callitropsis nootkatensis - Pinus contorta / Calamagrostis nutkaensis Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is located within a subalpine Wet Hypermaritime Mountain Hemlock Windward Variant (MHwh1) along the outer coast between a potential elevational range of 500 to 1100 m above sea level, from Rivers Inlet beyond northern Vancouver Island northward to Portland Canal, and including the windward Queen Charlotte Islands. This very poor, open, scrubby coniferous community is located on exposed outcrops with only the driest shedding upper slope and crest positions. This very low-productivity, scrubby subalpine woodland is dominated by Tsuga mertensiana and variable lesser coverage of Callitropsis nootkatensis, Thuja plicata, Abies amabilis, and Pinus contorta var. contorta. The sparse to moderate-cover shrub layer includes regenerating tree-layer species, as well as Vaccinium ovalifolium and Vaccinium alaskaense. Species in the moderately developed herb layer include a number of distinctive low woody species such as Phyllodoce empetriformis, Cassiope mertensiana, Harrimanella stelleriana, and Luetkea pectinata. Common species in the well-developed moss layer include Dicranum spp. and Rhytidiadelphus loreus. This subalpine woodland community is distinctive through its association with shallow poor soils on the most exposed shedding hummocks and ridges. Species diagnostic of this community include Phyllodoce empetriformis, Cassiope mertensiana, Harrimanella stelleriana, and Luetkea pectinata.
