Name: Pinus monophylla - Juniperus osteosperma / Quercus gambelii Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association has only been described from Zion National Park, Utah. It also occurs at Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. At Zion National Park, Pinus monophylla and Juniperus osteosperma constitute the canopy layer with 20-50% cover. Lack of Quercus turbinella distinguishes this association from the more widely distributed pinyon-juniper woodlands with a mixed montane shrub layer. Cercocarpus montanus, Quercus gambelii, and Amelanchier utahensis are the dominant shrubs in this association and at least two of these shrubs are present. Total shrub cover ranges from 10-70%. Common herbaceous species present are Poa fendleriana and Cordylanthus spp. This association occurs on gentle to moderately steep mountain ridge slopes and low colluvial slopes. Elevations range from 1400 to 1920 m (4600-6300 feet). Soil texture was not documented, but is likely to be sandy or clay loam. Slope aspects are variable. Ground cover is mostly litter with some small and large rocks.
