Name: Pinus monophylla - Juniperus osteosperma / Gutierrezia sarothrae / Pleuraphis jamesii Woodland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This association has only been described from Zion National Park, Utah. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. At Zion National Park, <i>Pinus monophylla</i> and <i>Juniperus osteosperma</i> constitute the tree layer with cover of 20-50%. <i>Gutierrezia sarothrae</i> is always present in a short-shrub layer with an average 10% cover. A taller shrub layer, if present, has 10% cover, and commonly includes <i>Psorothamnus fremontii, Salvia dorrii</i>, and <i>Ephedra viridis</i>. The perennial grass <i>Pleuraphis jamesii</i> typically has 10% cover and may be codominant with <i>Aristida purpurea</i> and <i>Bromus tectorum</i>. This type is distinguished from ~<i>Pinus monophylla - Juniperus osteosperma / Coleogyne ramosissima</i> Woodland (CEGL002971)$$ by the lack of <i>Coleogyne ramosissima</i>. This association occurs on gentle to moderate slopes with mostly southeastern aspects. Elevation ranges 1280 to 1400 m (4200-4600 feet). Soil texture was not documented for this association, but it is known that this area has a clay texture to its soils.
