Description: This ponderosa pine woodland association is currently only known from Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument in Arizona, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Elevation ranges from 2020-2300 m (average 2060 m). The association occurs on steep slopes on cinder cones as well as flatter areas (0-45% slope, average 14%). The tree layer is dominated by <i>Pinus ponderosa</i> 5-30 m tall. The shrub layer is sparse and includes <i>Brickellia californica, Ericameria nauseosa, Fallugia paradoxa, Rhus trilobata</i>, and <i>Ribes cereum</i>. The herbaceous cover is low to sparse and includes <i>Andropogon hallii, Bouteloua gracilis, Elymus elymoides, Festuca arizonica, Monardella odoratissima, Muhlenbergia montana, Oxytropis lambertii</i>.
