Description: This shrubland is found along the margins of the California Central and San Joaquin valleys, extending into the western Mojave and Transverse ranges. It occurs in uplands on hilltops and residual dunes with diatomaceous soils derived from sand or shale between 400-1000 m elevation. <i>Cleome isomeris, Ephedra californica, Eriogonum fasciculatum</i>, and <i>Ericameria linearifolia</i> are conspicuous shrubs in the canopy. <i>Isocoma acradenia, Eriogonum gracillimum</i>, and <i>Eastwoodia elegans</i> are also present. Shrubs are &lt;3 m tall, and the canopy is open. The ground layer is grassy.
