Name: Yucca schidigera / Pleuraphis rigida Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently only described from Joshua Tree National Park, California. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. This association is known from hot deserts of California, including in Anza-Borrego State Park, Joshua Tree National Park, and generally in the central Mojave Desert. Stands of the association at Joshua Tree are found at mid to high elevations (1000-1200 m [3500-4100 feet]) on flat to moderate (0-6°) slopes. These sites are found on bajadas and rocky hillslopes facing southwest, northeast and northwest. Soils range from medium sand to moderately fine silty clay loams derived from granitic parent material. Ground cover in this association consists of a mix of bedrock, boulder, stone, cobble, gravel, and fine material. The amount of vegetative litter is highly variable. This association experiences low to high levels of disturbance from competition from exotics. Stands of the association form a sparse shrubland with 0-2% cover for the tree/tall stratum, 7-37% cover for the shrub/medium stratum, and <1-15% cover for the herb/low stratum. Total vegetative cover ranges from 10-38%. This association is dominated by Pleuraphis rigida in the understory herb layer. Characteristically present in the shrub layer is Ambrosia dumosa, Cylindropuntia echinocarpa, Larrea tridentata, Simmondsia chinensis, and Yucca schidigera, though Yucca schidigera exhibits highest average cover, and Ambrosia dumosa and Larrea tridentata have variable though next highest average cover values. Yucca brevifolia is abundant in the shrub layer. Species that are often present in the shrub layer are Cylindropuntia ramosissima, Echinocereus engelmannii, Ephedra nevadensis, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Salazaria mexicana, and Senna armata. Xylorhiza tortifolia often occurs in the herb layer.
