Description: This woodland association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this association have been found on sites between 3050 and 3230 m (10,000-10,600 feet) of elevation on east and west aspects. Slopes are moderate to steep, and stands have been found on a variety of topographic positions. Sites are stony interspersed with patches of coarse soil. This association is characterized by a shrubby (krummholz) layer of <i>Pinus albicaulis</i> with occasional emergent individuals of <i>Pinus contorta</i>. <i>Ribes montigenum</i>, and <i>Artemisia tridentata</i> may be present in the shrub layer. The herbaceous layer is sparse and not very diverse. Total herbaceous cover averages about 10%. <i>Carex rossii</i> is the characteristic graminoid. Other common graminoid associates include <i>Juncus drummondii, Carex filifolia</i>, and/or <i>Achnatherum occidentale</i>. Forbs commonly found with this association may include <i>Ivesia santolinoides, Arenaria kingii ssp. compacta, Lupinus confertus</i>, and/or <i>Arabis platysperma</i>.
