Name: Juniperus grandis - Cercocarpus ledifolius / Artemisia tridentata Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This woodland association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This association is found between 2285 and 2560 m (7500-8400 feet) of elevation. Stands grow on all aspects on moderate to steep midslopes. Soils are silty loams to loamy sands derived from granite and metamorphic parent materials. This woodland forms an open to intermittent tree canopy between 10-20 m of height. Juniperus grandis dominates the canopy. Pinus monophylla often occurs in the canopy or as emergent individuals. The shrub or short-tree layer is open with Cercocarpus ledifolius dominant. Artemisia tridentata is also important. Other shrubs present may include Symphoricarpos rotundifolius, Eriogonum umbellatum, Linanthus pungens, Purshia tridentata, Holodiscus discolor, and/or Ribes velutinum. The ground layer is open to sparse, seldom achieving more than 20% cover, and graminoids dominate the stratum. Graminoid species that may be present include Elymus elymoides, Melica stricta, Poa secunda, and/or Achnatherum hymenoides. Penstemon speciosus is the only forb which attains any appreciable cover.
