Name: Pinus monophylla / Cercocarpus ledifolius / Artemisia tridentata - Purshia tridentata Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This woodland association is currently only known from east of the Sierra Crest in Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This association grows on northeast to northwest aspects between 2130 and 2410 m (7000-7900 feet) of elevation. Stands grow on moderate to steep lowslopes and midslopes. Soils are silty to loamy sands derived from igneous rocks. Aspects can be varied and do not seem to differentiate this type. Stands of this vegetation form open canopies of Pinus monophylla between 5-10 m in height and at approximately 25-35% cover. Juniperus occidentalis may co-occur at much lower cover values. Cercocarpus ledifolius occurs in scattered patches in the tree understory. The shrub layer is quite sparse with Artemisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, and Eriogonum umbellatum. The herbaceous layer is very sparse with large patches of bare ground. The dominant lifeforms in the ground layer are graminoids including Achnatherum hymenoides, Achnatherum speciosum, Elymus elymoides, and/or Melica stricta. The forb Arabis platysperma occurs regularly but at low cover.
