Name: Fraxinus latifolia - (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa) / Cornus sericea Riparian Forest Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This community type occurs in the overflow plain segment of the Columbia River, from Puget Island to the gorge of Washington. It also occurs along all major streams in the southern Puget Trough and the Willamette Valley, Oregon. This community type occupies slightly higher topographic positions on floodplain terraces and natural levees along river channels. Portions receive seasonal flooding. Most of the stands, especially up-river from Longview, appear to be located above the bottomlands that would have been flooded for prolonged periods prior to flood control dams. Soils are silt-loams. This community type is characterized by the codominance of <i>Fraxinus latifolia</i> and <i>Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa</i>. The relative dominance of the two tree species is highly variable. <i>Cornus sericea</i> typically dominates the shrub layer but is sometimes replaced by <i>Sambucus racemosa</i>. In most stands, the understory has been degraded by grazing and introduced <i>Phalaris arundinacea </i>making it difficult to determine the original understory components.
