Name: Ledum glandulosum - Gaultheria shallon / Carex obnupta Fen
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association occurs on perennially saturated peat soils, and usually occurs around the edges of open mire subject to successional infilling by trees and shrubs. It occurs only between the Columbia River and northern California. It may also occur in regenerating ~Tsuga heterophylla / Ledum glandulosum / Carex obnupta - Lysichiton americanus Treed Bog (CEGL000477)$$ swamp that has been logged, burned, or killed by prolonged flooding. This brushy association is transitional between open Ledum glandulosum mire to swamp forest. Mature trees are scarce or absent, but regenerating trees include Thuja plicata, Pinus contorta var. contorta, Tsuga heterophylla, and Picea sitchensis, indicating the transition to forest. Tree regeneration is confined to elevated microsites on tops of old hummocks, as well as decaying logs, stumps, and old root wads. The shrub and herb layer include species from both open mire, shrub swamp, and swamp forest. Ledum glandulosum is the dominant shrub, with lesser amounts of Spiraea douglasii and Gaultheria shallon. Carex obnupta and Carex aquatilis var. dives have the highest constancy in the herb layer, with Agrostis exarata, Cornus canadensis, and Blechnum spicant present in lesser amounts. Sphagnum is conspicuous in the moss layer.
