Description: This shrubland association is known from the Santa Monica Mountains as well as other parts of southern coastal California, including western Riverside and San Diego counties. It occurs on gentle to very steep southwest- and southeast-facing slopes at low elevations between 3 and 423 m. It is characterized by a codominance of <i>Encelia californica</i> and <i>Artemisia californica</i> in the shrub layer and a largely non-native herbaceous layer characterized by <i>Brassica nigra</i>. The emergent tree layer includes <i>Juglans californica</i> and <i>Sambucus nigra ssp. cerulea</i>.
