Description: This shrubland association occurs on moderately steep to steep northwest- and northeast-facing slopes at low elevations between 30 and 542 m. It is characterized by a dominance of <i>Hazardia squarrosa</i> and a subdominance of <i>Artemisia californica</i> in the shrub layer. In the herbaceous layer there is a mixture of several native and non-native species, none of which are particularly characteristic. The emergent tree layer is usually absent.
