Description: This woodland association is currently only known from Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This association occurs on a moderate slope (7%) with sandy soils at an elevation of 2538 m (7989 feet). Sandstone boulders and stones are found at low cover. The total tree cover is 5-10%, total shrub cover is 50-75%, and the total herbaceous cover is 10-25%. The species richness is 16 species. <i>Juniperus osteosperma</i> is the only species in the tree stratum and occurs with 5-10% cover and a height ranging from 5-10 m. The shrub stratum is dominated by <i>Cercocarpus montanus</i> and <i>Fendlera rupicola</i>, both with 25-50% cover. <i>Artemisia nova</i> and <i>Opuntia polyacantha</i> both occur with 1-5% cover. The average height for the shrub stratum is 1-2 m. The herbaceous stratum is dominated by the native forb <i>Paxistima myrsinites</i> with 5-10% cover.
