Description: This shrubland occupies deeper soils in dolostone glades associated with the Cahaba River in Bibb County, Alabama. It occurs as islands in herbaceous dominated areas, and as a narrow to wide (5-30 m wide) marginal zone. Characteristic shrubs are <i>Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana, Rhus aromatica var. aromatica, Croton alabamensis var. alabamensis, Frangula caroliniana, Forestiera ligustrina, Phyllanthopsis phyllanthoides, Berchemia scandens, Hypericum frondosum, Sideroxylon lycioides</i>, and stunted individuals of <i>Acer leucoderme, Quercus muehlenbergii, Quercus austrina, Fraxinus americana</i>, and <i>Ulmus alata</i>. <i>Carex eburnea</i> is a characteristic herb, which is present primarily in this community and is not as common in associated woodlands or herbaceous types.
