Description: This early-successional forest occurs along the shores of lakes, ponds, artificial impoundments, and possibly in other topographic situations in the Gulf Coastal Plain and adjacent ecoregions of North America. The canopy is strongly dominated by <i>Salix nigra</i> but may also include <i>Liquidambar styraciflua, Acer rubrum, Fraxinus pennsylvanica</i>, and <i>Acer negundo</i> within their respective ranges. <i>Cephalanthus occidentalis</i> is often a strong dominant in the shrub layer and may be the only species present in that stratum. Other understory components may also include <i>Nekemias arborea, Baccharis neglecta</i>, and <i>Amorpha fruticosa</i>.
