Description:
This forest occurs in xeric sands in mainland areas near the coast in the Florida Panhandle. The closed canopy (10-20 m high) is composed of <i>Pinus clausa</i>. The subcanopy includes <i>Quercus geminata, Quercus laevis, Quercus virginiana, Quercus hemisphaerica</i>, and <i>Magnolia grandiflora</i>. The open shrub layer includes <i>Chrysoma pauciflosculosa, Clinopodium coccineum, Licania michauxii, Quercus arkansana, Quercus margarettae, Quercus myrtifolia, Osmanthus americanus var. americanus, Castanea pumila, Vaccinium arboreum, Vaccinium stamineum, Yucca flaccida, Serenoa repens, Ilex opaca var. opaca</i>, and <i>Ilex vomitoria</i>. Woody vines are also frequent, and include <i>Smilax auriculata, Vitis rotundifolia</i>, and <i>Bignonia capreolata</i>. The sparse herb layer includes <i>Rhynchospora megalocarpa, Rhynchosia cytisoides, Croton argyranthemus, Silphium compositum, Euphorbia floridana, Eriogonum tomentosum, Smilax pumila, Dichanthelium commutatum, Pityopsis graminifolia</i>, and <i>Polygonella macrophylla</i>. Ground lichens are abundant, primarily <i>Cladonia evansii</i>. The dynamics of this community are poorly understood.
