Name: Encelia resinifera Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This sticky brittlebush shrubland association is currently described from Grand Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in Arizona. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this type. It typically occurs on low and mid sideslopes at 1025 to 1450 m (3375-4750 feet) elevation, but can be found as low as 600 m (1950 feet). It chiefly occurs on moderate to steep gradients (25-40°), but is also found on gentler slopes (10-20°). Soils are well- to rapidly-drained silty or sandy loams or clays, and the underlying geology can vary from limestone to sandstone or shale. Vegetation is characterized and dominated by the short shrub Encelia resinifera. A sparse tall-shrub layer that includes Acacia greggii is infrequently present. The short-shrub layer occasionally supports Ephedra torreyana. A fairly sparse dwarf-shrub layer of Gutierrezia sarothrae and Thamnosma montana occasionally occurs. The exotic Bromus rubens is very common in a relatively well-developed graminoid layer. Muhlenbergia porteri, Achnatherum speciosum, and Aristida purpurea are also somewhat common. A variety of species, including Sphaeralcea grossulariifolia, Gilia sp., Galium stellatum, and Eriogonum inflatum, occur in the forb understory.
