Name: Carya ovata / Zanthoxylum americanum / Panicum philadelphicum - Carex pensylvanica Open Woodland Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: The shagbark hickory / prickly-ash alvar woodland type is only known from the Flamborough Plains in southern Ontario west of Lake Ontario, where it is found on shallow soils over flat dolostone outcrops (pavements). Other examples may exist in the Lake Erie and Lake Ontario watersheds. This savanna community has scattered trees forming 10-25% canopy cover, and a variable understory with shrubby patches and grassy patches. The dominant tree is <i>Carya ovata</i>; other characteristic trees include <i>Quercus macrocarpa, Quercus muehlenbergii, Fraxinus americana</i>, and <i>Ulmus thomasii</i>. The most abundant shrub is <i>Zanthoxylum americanum</i>; other characteristic shrubs are <i>Cornus racemosa, Rhamnus cathartica, Prunus virginiana</i>, and <i>Symphoricarpos albus</i>. Characteristic herbs of grassy patches in the ground layer are <i>Danthonia spicata, Hieracium piloselloides, Panicum philadelphicum, Carex pensylvanica, Poa compressa</i>, and <i>Solidago nemoralis</i>.
