Name: Calliandra eriophylla / Eragrostis lehmanniana Ruderal Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This shrubland typically occurs on gentle midslopes of ridges in southern Arizona at around 1090 m (3580 feet) elevation. Soils are well-drained sandy loam. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense (20-50% cover) short-shrub canopy strongly dominated by Calliandra eriophylla with an open to moderately dense (20-30% cover) herbaceous layer dominated or codominated by Eragrostis lehmanniana. Other common species are Aristida spp., Bouteloua chondrosioides, Bouteloua eriopoda, Bouteloua hirsuta, Bouteloua rothrockii, Chloris virgata, Gutierrezia spp., Opuntia engelmannii, and Setaria spp. Diagnostic of this shrubland association is the strong dominance of Calliandra eriophylla in the shrub layer with 20% or more cover and Eragrostis lehmanniana in the herbaceous layer with over a third of the total perennial graminoid cover or over 25% cover. Other shrubs may be present, such as Prosopis velutina, Dasylirion wheeleri, and Fouquieria splendens, at very low cover (<10%).
