Description:
This association is currently only described from Great Basin National Park, Nevada. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. This association occurs at elevations from 2456-3044 m (8060-9990 feet) on moderate to steep slopes. Sites include low slopes, midslopes and high slopes on all aspects. Substrates are rocky and composed mostly of colluvium and bedrock derived of granite, quartzite, and limestone. Soils are well- to rapidly drained and composed of silt loam, sandy loam, loam, loamy sand, sandy clay loam and silty clay loam. This shrubland association is characterized by a sparse to closed canopy (5-75% cover) dominated by <i>Cercocarpus ledifolius</i>. Other canopy associates may include <i>Abies concolor, Pinus monophylla, Pinus flexilis</i>, and <i>Populus tremuloides</i>. Understories may be shrub- or herbaceous-dominated. Shrub cover can be sparse to closed ranging from 5-75% cover. Dominants include <i>Symphoricarpos oreophilus, Arctostaphylos patula</i>, or <i>Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana</i>. Other common shrub associates include <i>Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Eriogonum microthecum, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Mahonia repens, Opuntia polyacantha, Prunus virginiana</i>, and <i>Sambucus nigra ssp. cerulea</i>. Herbaceous-dominated understories are sparse to open and dominated by <i>Poa fendleriana, Elymus trachycaulus, Elymus elymoides</i>, or <i>Festuca idahoensis</i>. Forb cover is low and species may include <i>Balsamorhiza sagittata, Collinsia parviflora, Comandra umbellata, Descurainia californica, Hackelia patens, Penstemon watsonii, Pseudostellaria jamesiana</i>, and <i>Viola purpurea</i>.
