Name: Populus tremuloides / Rhamnus cathartica Ruderal Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently only described from Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Minnesota. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. This community has a moderately open to closed canopy which is usually 5-15 m tall. Populus tremuloides, or rarely Betula papyrifera, is the dominant species. Other common canopy species are Quercus ellipsoidalis, Quercus rubra, and Populus deltoides. The subcanopy is sparse and often difficult to distinguish from the canopy and tall-shrub strata. The most common species in it are Betula papyrifera, Prunus serotina, and Rhamnus cathartica. The tall-shrub stratum is moderately open to moderately closed but the short-shrub stratum is closed to dense. Rhamnus cathartica is the most consistently abundant shrub with lesser amounts of Ribes missouriense, Prunus serotina, Parthenocissus vitacea, Vitis riparia, Zanthoxylum americanum, and exotic Lonicera spp. (Lonicera tatarica, Lonicera morrowii, and Lonicera x bella), among others. The herbaceous stratum is not as dense as the shrubs but is also characterized by generalist or weedy species. Amphicarpaea bracteata, Galium triflorum, Circaea lutetiana, Carex pensylvanica, Actaea rubra, Ageratina altissima, and Desmodium glutinosum are typical. This community is composed largely of invasive or generalist species and can occur on a variety of upland habitats. The unvegetated cover on the ground is about 2:1 litter to bare ground.
