Name: Fraxinus pennsylvanica - Juniperus virginiana - Pinus spp. - Acer negundo Ruderal Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently only described from Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Minnesota. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. This forest can be variable in composition and physiognomy from woodland to closed forest and from short canopy trees to moderately tall. The unifying characteristics are a history of extensive disturbance and dominance by exotic and native generalist species in all strata. Species on a site may have been planted at some point in the past. Abundant trees can be Acer negundo, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Juniperus virginiana, Picea spp. (planted), Pinus resinosa (planted), Pinus strobus (planted), Pinus sylvestris, and Prunus serotina. The canopy is typically uneven in height. The understory varies greatly with the amount of tree canopy and history of site use. Common shrubs are Rhamnus cathartica, exotic Lonicera spp., and Zanthoxylum americanum. The ground layer can be dominated by grasses, especially Bromus inermis and Poa pratensis where the tree canopy is open, or a variety of weedy forbs. This semi-natural forest or woodland is found on a variety of settings but all with a history of significant disturbance. Soils range from sandy to loamy. Most of these sites were disturbed for agricultural or urban development and so are on relatively flat areas. Remnants of development such as building foundations, or walls, fences, and roads are in some sites.
