Reference:
NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description:
This association is currently only described from Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Minnesota. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. This community is characterized by a moderately open to dense herbaceous stratum (avg. cover 85%) dominated by exotic and weedy native forbs. There may be shrubs and trees present but they are either very short or have less than 25% cover. Common herbaceous species vary depending on past site use, seed sources, and other factors but forbs often include Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Arctium minus, Berteroa incana, Cirsium arvense, Conyza canadensis, Securigera varia, Galium aparine, Melilotus officinalis, Monarda fistulosa, Rudbeckia hirta, Solidago canadensis, Trifolium pratense, and Verbascum thapsus. Graminoids can be common and often include Bromus inermis, Panicum capillare, Poa pratensis, Setaria viridis, and others. The shrubs and small trees than can be present are usually exotic or generalist native species, much like the herbaceous layer. Acer negundo and Populus deltoides can be present, typically as short trees, along with the shrubs Lonicera spp., Rhamnus cathartica, Rubus spp., and Zanthoxylum americanum. This ruderal community is found on a variety of soils but is usually on flat to moderately sloping sites. The ground is mostly bare soil (avg. 72%) with some plant litter (avg. 13%). The common factor affecting this community is a history of extensive disturbance from agricultural or urban development activities that result in a site strongly dominated by exotic or weedy native forbs.
